The ripple bob is the latest bob hairstyle everyone’s talking about. After the Barbie bob and angel bob became popular, this new style is taking over.
This hairstyle takes inspiration from the 1920s finger waves but makes them more relaxed and beachy. It’s similar to other retro styles that are coming back, like the 60s flip bob and 70s shag.
What makes it great? It’s much easier to take care of than super precise bobs. Perfect for a laid-back summer look.
“It’s the perfect mix of old-school and modern. You can wear it every day or dress it up for special events,” says hairstylist Edward Taylor.
What is the ripple bob?
It’s a bob haircut with soft, gentle waves. The style works with your hair’s natural texture and movement.
“The ripple bob is basically a classic bob with soft waves added in,” Taylor explains. “The 2025 version has looser, more natural-looking waves than the tight curls from the 1920s.”
You can make the waves tighter for more curls, or brush them out for softer ripples. Taylor says to “use a small curling iron to create curls, then gently brush them out with a wide-tooth comb.”
“For a flatter look, pin the brushed curls flat against your head in a wave pattern. Spray with hairspray, let it set, then remove the clips. This gives you a modern finger wave,” he adds.
What should you ask for at the salon?
The best thing to do is bring pictures to show your hairstylist. This helps them understand exactly what you want. You can also add highlights or balayage to brighten up your hair color for summer.
The haircut is usually jaw-length. You can add bangs if you want. Your stylist can use different tools and methods to create different looks.
Taylor says: “The ripple bob has many different looks. You can go retro or modern. You can have flat finger waves, mermaid waves, or bouncy curls that you brush out. Use either a flat iron or curling iron to create any of these styles.”
